This was a very special and unique Thanksgiving Day this year. Because Papa Douglas was down at LDS Hospital receiving chemo treatments and trying to get his body to produce white blood cells, we decided to have Thanksgiving close to him and grandma. We held the gathering and dinner at Alpine in the conference room.
At first, I was worried about how it was going to all work out. Usually, you think of Thanksgiving being celebrated in a home where you can go relax in front of a good movie on the couch with a blanket. This was not the case this year, so I was wondering how it was going to turn out.
We made a meal plan and everyone divided up the responsibilites for food and paper goods. We brought games to play and even watched "Elf" and "Polar Express". As always, the food was great. We even made sure to have the traditional brussel sprouts. I, again, tried one and my opinion has not changed about them. But, I will try again next year....maybe they will grow on me!
Roger's white blood cells needed to be 500 or larger for him to be able to go home for Thanksgiving. It initially took days and days for the numbers to even start showing up. Anyway, a miracle happened and his numbers doubled so that he could leave the hospital on Thanksgiving Day. It was a nice surprise to have him and mom walk in the room. We were all excited to see them both. It was kind of a shock to see dad with no hair and he had to wear a mask. Clayton was excited to see Papa, but Cooper was scared of him, so he wouldn't go near him.
It ended up being a really great Thanksgiving Day. Everyone had a great time spending the day with each other. And it turned out being great, even though it was not at a typical location. On this Thanksgiving Day, we had a lot to be thankful for...little did we know that dad's leukemia was on its way into remission!
